Understanding Causes of a Crack by a Sink

Repairing granite countertops involves addressing various issues that contribute to failures. Two recent cases involved Uba Tuba and Bordeaux granite tops, both exhibiting cracks due to multiple factors. These factors include the use of inappropriate materials such as latex caulk instead of silicone, improper support methods for sink flanges, and the use of plain steel rods instead of recommended materials like stainless steel or fiberglass, leading to rusting and expansion within the granite.

Water leakage around sink flanges exacerbates the problem, causing rust to penetrate the granite and result in cracking. Rectifying such issues involves removing the rusted rods, resetting sinks with proper supports and sealants, and repairing the damaged granite.

Accessing the affected area requires removing cabinet fronts and utilizing specialized tools like grinders. Once the rusted rods are exposed, they are cut and removed, and the granite is repaired using epoxy and clamps. Proper repair techniques ensure structural integrity and aesthetic appeal, avoiding the need for costly replacements.
