Chip on Surface Caused by Metal Rod
To strengthen a weak part of the countertop stone fabricators use metal rods/bars for the purpose of strengthening a weak part of the counter, in most cases it’s around sink cutout or narrow and long backsplash. Also, it can be useful in weak kinds of stone (with a lot of internal/hidden cracks or veins) or just poor-quality stone. Fabricators make a channel in the stone body from the back side, then fill up it with liquid epoxy, then insert it into a metal bar.
In years of contact with water, metal can start rusting and expanding in volume, so it can lead to a counter to be cracked or chipped as in the picture below.
