White Marble Fireplace Arch Rebuilt from Individual Carved Pieces

This white marble fireplace arch was reconstructed from individual carved pieces, each fitted together with precision to form a seamless, ornate structure. The result is a fireplace surround that reads as a single unified element rather than an assembly of parts.

Fireplace arches of this style are typically found in pre-war residential buildings and historic townhouses. Original marble fireplaces were often built in multiple sections at the time of construction, and over the decades the pieces can shift, crack, or separate as the building settles. When restoration is undertaken, the goal is to reunite these elements as closely as possible to the original design.

The carved detailing visible throughout this arch required careful handling. Each ornamental segment was cleaned, aligned, and secured using stone-appropriate adhesives and reinforcements that remain invisible from the front face. The center grille panel with its intricate lattice pattern was treated separately, cleaned and stabilized before being refitted into the arch opening.

Matching the finish across all segments is one of the more demanding aspects of this type of work. Stone that has aged differently in separate locations takes on varying tones and surface textures. Careful honing and polishing brought the assembled sections into a consistent appearance, giving the arch a coherent, refined look across the whole surface.

The completed fireplace now serves as a functional and decorative centerpiece of the room, with no visible evidence of the reconstruction. The stone surface reflects light evenly and the ornate profile reads cleanly from any angle.
