Broken Knoll Saarinen 48 inch Round Black Marble Table
This project began with a classic Knoll Saarinen 48-inch round black marble table that originally had just a single crack and a brittle, bubbling polymer coating. The owner, traveling from Michigan to New Jersey, took great care to transport the tabletop flat on a plywood support to prevent further damage. However, black marble can become incredibly brittle with age—this piece was over 60 years old. Despite the owner’s best efforts, the single crack Spider-webbed into thousands of fragments during the long transit.
The “before” image shows the table in what many would consider a hopeless state, with the marble shattered into several large pieces and numerous smaller shards. The owner feared the table was destined for the landfill, as finding a specialist with the specific skills to handle such a complex Saarinen restoration is notoriously difficult. What started as a standard repair for a 1/3-diameter crack had evolved into a high-stakes structural puzzle

Because the marble had become extremely brittle with age, simply gluing the pieces back together would not have provided enough strength for the table to be reliable again.
The technical process shown here is the rod-in-channel stabilization. Deep channels were cut into the underside of the marble, crossing the major fracture lines. Steel rods were then embedded into these channels and encased in industrial-grade epoxy. This internal skeleton acts as a bridge across the cracks, redistributing weight and providing the structural integrity necessary for the table to survive the long trip back to Michigan and daily use.
As seen in the photo, multiple reinforcement points were placed strategically around the center pedestal mounting area and along the radiating cracks. This meticulous “under-the-hood” work is what makes a professional restoration permanent, ensuring that even a piece once thought destined for the landfill can be fully recovered and safely remounted on its original base.
